Troops of the Nigerian Army under the 3 Division and Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace have arrested three suspected gunrunners and recovered weapons during an operation in Plateau State.
The operation was carried out in the early hours of Wednesday, at Vom in Jos South Local Government Area, following intelligence reports on the activities of a gunrunning syndicate.
According to the Army, the raid was part of ongoing efforts to stop the spread of illegal weapons and ensure peace during the yuletide period.
During the operation, the troops arrested three suspects and recovered two locally made AK-47 rifles, one round of 7.62mm ammunition, two knives and three mobile phones.
Confirming the development, the Media Information Officer of JTF Operation Enduring Peace, Major Samson Natip Zhakom, said the operation was successful and conducted in a professional manner.
\u201cThe troops carried out an intelligence-led operation which led to the arrest of three suspected gunrunners and the recovery of arms and other items,\u201d he said.
Major Zhakom also disclosed that while the troops were leaving the area, they faced resistance from some youths and women who blocked the road, threw stones at security personnel and damaged military vehicles.
He said one officer sustained injuries during the incident, while a Hilux vehicle radiator and the windscreen of a gun truck were damaged. The situation, however, was quickly brought under control.
\u201cThe troops exercised restraint and maintained discipline throughout the encounter,\u201d he added.
The Army said the arrested suspects and recovered weapons are currently in custody for further investigation, while follow-up operations are ongoing to arrest other members of the syndicate and prevent regrouping.
The military warned individuals and groups against obstructing security operations, stressing that such actions are serious security offences.

\u201cWhile the cooperation of law-abiding citizens is indispensable to the success of ongoing security operations, individuals and groups are hereby warned against obstructing troops in the performance of their lawful duties, as such actions constitute serious security breaches and will be dealt with in accordance with extant laws.
