The Kwara State Police Command has apprehended three women suspected of attempting to smuggle arms and ammunition to a gang of kidnappers operating from a forest in the state.
The suspects \u2013 Aisha Haruna, Rabi Umaru, and Fatimoh Abubakar \u2013 were arrested at Babanla Motor Park following actionable intelligence.
According to the Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, the arrest was made after officers intercepted a suspicious vehicle. One of the passengers reportedly fled into nearby bushes upon sighting security operatives.
A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered an AK-47 rifle and 31 rounds of live ammunition concealed inside a bag belonging to one of the women.
During interrogation, one of the suspects reportedly admitted she had received the weapon from a contact in Kaduna State, identified as \u2018Mai-Gowaye\u2019, and was instructed to deliver it to a man known as \u2018Saleh\u2019 within the Baba-Sango forest, believed to be a stronghold for a kidnap-for-ransom syndicate.
Another suspect confessed she was en route to reunite with her husband, a known member of the gang believed to be hiding in the same forest area.
The woman who fled the scene, also believed to be the wife of a suspected kidnapper, remains at large. Police say surveillance has been increased in and around the forest as efforts to dismantle the criminal network intensify.
In a related development, the command also announced the arrest of two men, Suleiman Jamiu and Mumini Mohammed, in Share, Ifelodun Local Government Area, found in possession of N11.3 million in suspected ransom payments.
