Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu has committed to partnering with the Nigeria Judo Federation (NJF) in growing judo across Nigeria, raising hopes for a landmark 2026 IGP Judo Championships, following a high-level courtesy visit to Force Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
The delegation, led by NJF President Dr. Musa Oshodi, met IGP Disu at the IGP Conference Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja. Discussions centred on deepening collaboration between the federation and the Nigeria Police Force, which has historically produced several of the country\u2019s top judokas.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Dr. Oshodi described the engagement as \u201ccordial, productive, and inspiring,\u201d adding that the IGP\u2019s background as a former judo athlete gave the discussions added depth and personal resonance.
\u201cWe presented three key requests to the IGP,\u201d Dr. Oshodi said. \u201cFirst, we sought his sponsorship and support for the 2026 IGP Judo Championships. Second, we proposed closer collaboration with the Nigeria Police to intensify their kinetic defence capability through judo training. Third, we appealed to him to use his good office to attract individual and corporate sponsors to the federation.\u201d
IGP Disu, who holds a 4th Dan black belt and now serves as Life Patron of the NJF, responded with an unequivocal show of support.
\u201cIGP Disu told us he is ready to partner with the federation in achieving its aspirations. He understands the values of discipline, resilience, and respect that judo instils, and he wants to see those values spread further within the Force and beyond,\u201d Dr. Oshodi said.

The visit also provided an opportunity to formally notify the IGP of his recent promotion from 3rd Dan to 4th Dan and his elevation from Patron to Life Patron of the NJF \u2014 recognitions the federation said reflect his long-standing contribution to the sport.
\u201cThis recognition is our way of honouring his contributions and acknowledging his place in the judo family. His acceptance and words of encouragement have energised us to work harder for the growth of the sport,\u201d Dr. Oshodi added.
With a 4th Dan black belt and a personal history on the mat, IGP Disu brings rare credibility to his new role as Life Patron. For the NJF, his buy-in is more than symbolic \u2014 it represents a direct line to institutional support, funding networks, and the vast talent pool within the Nigeria Police Force.
Dr. Oshodi expressed optimism that the partnership would produce tangible results ahead of the 2026 IGP Judo Championships and reinforce the role of judo in national security training.
\u201cWe are confident that with the IGP\u2019s support, judo will continue to grow as both a competitive sport and a tool for building discipline and tactical capacity within our security agencies,\u201d he said.
