NFIU seeks deeper intelligence sharing ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 Mutual Evaluation<\/em><\/h3>\n

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening intelligence sharing and operational collaboration to track illicit financial flows, dismantle criminal networks and enhance investigations into terrorism, kidnapping, cybercrime, corruption, human trafficking and other forms of organised crime.<\/p>\n

The commitment was reaffirmed on Tuesday when the Chief Executive Officer of the NFIU, Hafsat Abubakar Bakari, led the agency’s management team on a courtesy visit to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.<\/p>\n

Speaking during the visit, Bakari described the engagement as more than a routine courtesy call, noting that it underscored the strategic partnership between both institutions in advancing Nigeria’s national security, economic stability and compliance with international anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing standards.<\/p>\n

She described the Nigeria Police Force as one of the NFIU’s most important partners, given its central role in detecting, investigating and prosecuting financial crimes while disrupting the financial systems that sustain criminal enterprises.<\/p>\n

According to her, financial intelligence has become an indispensable investigative tool, enabling law enforcement agencies to connect criminal activities to the individuals, networks and beneficiaries behind offences such as terrorism, kidnapping, cybercrime, human trafficking, drug trafficking, corruption, illegal mining, arms trafficking and other organised crimes.<\/p>\n

Bakari stressed that effective collaboration between the NFIU and the Police would ensure that criminals are not only apprehended but also stripped of the financial resources used to fund and sustain their operations.<\/p>\n

She commended the leadership and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force for their contribution to Nigeria’s engagement with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), noting that the Force played a significant role in implementing the country’s action plan, which culminated in Nigeria’s removal from the FATF Grey List.<\/p>\n

The NFIU Chief disclosed that Nigeria is preparing for its third-round Mutual Evaluation in 2027, explaining that the assessment will measure not only the existence of laws and institutions but also the effectiveness of agencies in using financial intelligence, investigating and prosecuting money laundering and terrorism financing offences, and identifying, tracing and recovering criminal assets.<\/p>\n

She further revealed that, following the approval of the Inspector-General of Police, the NFIU recently conducted a stocktaking exercise across the Nigeria Police Force. While the exercise identified considerable institutional strengths, it also highlighted areas requiring further attention, particularly in strengthening officers’ knowledge of money laundering, terrorism financing, financial intelligence and asset recovery across commands and formations.<\/p>\n

Bakari said the forthcoming evaluation would focus on institutional effectiveness rather than isolated successes, stressing the need to improve the use of financial intelligence, strengthen data collection and statistical reporting, and enhance asset tracing, freezing and confiscation through updated operational guidelines and standard operating procedures.<\/p>\n

She noted that criminals often leave financial footprints long before physical evidence emerges, adding that following the movement of illicit funds can expose criminal networks, facilitators, beneficiaries and the command structures behind organised crime. She reaffirmed the NFIU’s commitment to supporting the Nigeria Police Force through intelligence sharing, strategic analysis, training, capacity building, operational support and international cooperation.<\/p>\n

Responding, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu described financial intelligence as an indispensable component of modern policing, stressing that the increasing sophistication and speed of financial transactions require stronger collaboration between security agencies to effectively trace illicit funds and identify those behind criminal enterprises.<\/p>\n

According to the IGP, tracking the movement of money has become critical to investigations into terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, fraud and other serious crimes, as it enables investigators to uncover criminal networks that might otherwise remain hidden.<\/p>\n

He assured the NFIU of the Nigeria Police Force’s continued commitment to deepening the partnership, strengthening the capacity of police officers in financial investigations and working closely with the agency to advance Nigeria’s efforts against money laundering, terrorism financing and organised crime.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
