Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has pledged increased investment in sports within the Nigeria Police Force following Corporal Ezekiel Nathaniel\u2019s gold-medal success at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Disu made the commitment while receiving Nathaniel, the men\u2019s 400 metres hurdles champion, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The IGP said Nathaniel\u2019s achievement had reinforced the longstanding relationship between the Nigeria Police Force and sports, noting that the feat demonstrated what police personnel could accomplish when given the right platform and support.
\u201cThe Nigeria Police Force and sports have always been twins, bound together by shared values of discipline, teamwork and excellence,\u201d Disu said.
\u201cThis victory is a powerful reminder of that bond, and of what our personnel can achieve when given the platform and support to thrive both in service and in competition.\u201d
The Police chief assured officers with sporting talents that the Force would continue to identify, nurture and support athletes within its ranks.
\u201cI want Corporal Ezekiel Nathaniel, and every officer watching, to know that this Force will continue to invest in and support police sports.
\u201cWe will keep identifying, nurturing and celebrating talent within our ranks, because a Force that is strong in body and spirit is a Force that serves the nation better,\u201d he added.
Disu, who described himself as a sportsman, said he was particularly proud of Nathaniel\u2019s performance at the Commonwealth Games.
He noted that the victory had brought honour not only to the athlete but also to the Nigeria Police Force and the country.
\u201cAs a sportsman myself, I take particular pride in this achievement. Corporal Ezekiel Nathaniel, you have honoured your uniform, your Force and your country,\u201d the IGP said.
\u201cCongratulations, and may this be the first of many more victories to come.\u201d
