The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has disclosed that he deployed CP Samuel Erale as the specific election commissioner of police for Osun State and DIG Ishyaku Mohammed to coordinate overall security for the August 15, 2026, governorship election to restore confidence in the command\u2019s neutrality.<\/p>\r\n
The substantive CP, Ibrahim Gotan of Osun State, remains the CP of the state and is not removed pending the time when the election processes are concluded in the state.
The IGP stated that the police introduced the position of an electoral commissioner of police to oversee election security, with the officer assuming responsibility for security operations ahead of the election.
\u201cFor the first time, we introduced the Electoral Commissioner of Police, who will be taking charge of the election early, after we noticed that certain groups of politicians and political parties complained that they no longer had confidence in the Commissioner of Police.
\u201cThe Commissioner of Police was, therefore, asked to step aside while the Electoral Commissioner of Police moved in ahead of the election.
\u201cThe AIG in charge of the election will be moving in any moment from now. The Deputy Commissioner of Police, who will be taking charge of the Osun election, will also be moving in,\u201d he said.
Disu, however, assured residents that the police would work closely with other security agencies deployed for the exercise.
\u201cYes, we are going to cooperate with other sister agencies that will support us during this election,\u201d he said.
