Police to work with INEC, EFCC, ICPC to investigate electoral offences and ensure suspects face trial<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has warned politicians and their supporters against engaging in vote-buying, political thuggery, arms movement, voter intimidation and other acts capable of undermining the 2027 general elections, declaring that the Nigeria Police Force will act against offenders regardless of their status.<\/p>\n

The IGP gave the warning on Monday at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers (CARSPO 2026) in Owerri, Imo State, where he charged senior police officers to begin preparations immediately for the security of the forthcoming electoral cycle.
\n\"\"<\/p>\n

According to the IGP, the Police would not only arrest persons involved in electoral offences but would work with relevant institutions to ensure that offenders are properly investigated and prosecuted.<\/p>\n

\u201cArrest is not enough. We will work with INEC, the EFCC and the ICPC to investigate vote-buying and inducement, and with prosecutors so that those arrested face trial, not just headlines. Impunity is the greatest encouragement to electoral crime,\u201d the IGP stated.<\/p>\n

He further warned political actors and their supporters against employing thugs, buying votes, moving arms or threatening voters and electoral officials, stressing that the Police would act against anyone involved in such activities, irrespective of status.<\/p>\n

The IGP noted that the responsibility of the Police extends beyond election day, stressing that effective election security must cover the entire electoral cycle, including intelligence gathering, planning, training, protection of electoral personnel and materials, prevention of violence and rapid response to
\nemerging threats.<\/p>\n

\nHe therefore unveiled a six-pillar approach to election security, comprising early intelligence and warning systems, intensive training, joint command and inter-agency coordination, rapid communication and technology, community partnership, and strict neutrality.<\/p>\n

He directed that flashpoints and criminal networks be mapped ahead of the elections, while Commissioners of Police were charged to maintain a strong understanding of their respective commands and ensure that credible intelligence reaches the appropriate level of command in time for action.<\/p>\n

The IGP also directed that police personnel be adequately trained in crowd management, protection of electoral personnel and materials, conflict prevention, rapid response and human-rights-compliant policing.
\n\"\"<\/p>\n

Particular attention, he said, must be given to the protection of ad-hoc INEC personnel and vulnerable voters, including women, elderly persons and persons with disabilities, noting that voters must feel safe enough to exercise their franchise.<\/p>\n

On inter-agency collaboration, IGP Disu stressed that no single agency could secure an election alone. He called for joint exercises involving INEC and sister security and law-enforcement agencies, with clear lines of command and communication established before any incident occurs.<\/p>\n

He also raised concerns over the growing threat posed by election-related disinformation, noting that fake results, forged police statements and inflammatory videos could trigger violence before security personnel arrive at affected locations.<\/p>\n

He assured that the Police would monitor and counter election disinformation with verified facts and pursue persons who deliberately use online platforms to incite violence.<\/p>\n

The IGP further directed Commissioners of Police to publish official contact numbers through which members of the public could reach them, stressing that accessibility to the public was essential to effective policing.<\/p>\n

\u201c A Commissioner of Police the public cannot reach cannot understand the public’s fears,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Emphasising the importance of police neutrality, the IGP declared that the Force would protect citizens and enforce the law without taking sides or seeking to determine political outcomes.<\/p>\n

He warned that any police officer who takes sides, harasses voters, colludes with political actors or abuses his or her powers during the elections would be investigated and punished.<\/p>\n

While charging officers to uphold professionalism and respect for human rights, IGP Disu also directed that election-duty allowances be paid on time and that duty rotations allow officers adequate rest, stressing that the welfare of personnel remains critical to effective and accountable policing.<\/p>\n

The IGP’s warning comes against the backdrop of ongoing security operations across the country. Since assuming office in February 2026, the Nigeria Police Force has arrested 251 terrorists and suspected bandits, 343 murder suspects, 566 armed robbery suspects and 483 suspected cultists.<\/p>\n

Within the same period, police operatives have rescued 1,066 kidnapped victims and recovered 947 firearms and more than 22,000 rounds of ammunition.<\/p>\n

While commending officers for these efforts, the IGP acknowledged that kidnapping, banditry, terrorism and communal violence continue to pose serious threats to the lives and peace of Nigerians.
\n\"\"<\/p>\n

He consequently charged officers not to allow the forthcoming elections to distract them from ongoing counter-crime operations, insisting that the Force must simultaneously combat existing security threats and secure the electoral process.<\/p>\n

The IGP also called on Nigerians to participate peacefully in the elections and report wrongdoing, assuring citizens that the Police would protect their right to vote.<\/p>\n

He announced that a public election complaints line would be unveiled by the Force Public Relations Department ahead of the 2027 general elections.<\/p>\n

Concluding his charge to senior police officers, IGP Disu said the outcome of the retreat must be a practical election-security framework that clearly defines who does what, when, where and how, rather than another document that would remain on a shelf.<\/p>\n
