Prioritizing Intelligence and Trust -IGP Disu Outlines New Vision for Police Force

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, respect for human rights, public trust and the responsible use of technology in tackling crime and terrorism.
Disu stated this on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the formal launch of Beyond the Bullets: Policing Terrorism in a Democratic System, authored by former Inspector-General of Police, MD Abubakar, at the Police Resource Centre in Abuja.
In his goodwill message, the police chief said the book’s central message aligned with the direction of the Nigeria Police Force, stressing that effective policing required more than the use of force.
He identified adherence to the rule of law, professional competence and public confidence as essential elements of effective law enforcement in a democratic society.
The IGP urged police officers and Nigerians to read the book not merely as a record of past events but as a resource for understanding the need for sustained institutional reform, professionalism and adherence to democratic values.
He emphasised that counterterrorism operations must be conducted in line with constitutional provisions and respect for fundamental human rights.
Disu also commended Abubakar for his leadership during a challenging period marked by insurgency and terrorism, noting that the pursuit of public safety could go hand in hand with respect for constitutional principles.
According to him, the book offers valuable insights for policymakers, security practitioners, scholars and members of the public, drawing on the retired police chief’s years of operational experience, strategic thinking and service.
He expressed confidence that the lessons contained in the publication would help guide current and future police leaders as they navigate the demands of law enforcement within a democratic framework.
On behalf of the officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, Disu congratulated Abubakar on the publication and endorsed its public presentation.
He also wished the retired IGP good health, long life and continued contributions to national development.
