Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, have apprehended several suspected street urchins, commonly referred to as area boys, for allegedly harassing motorists in different parts of Lagos State.
The development was confirmed in a statement released by the RRS via its official X handle on Thursday.
According to the statement, the arrests were made during a series of coordinated sting operations conducted on Thursday, October 9, 2025, targeting areas notorious for extortion and attacks on motorists whose vehicles broke down on the highway.
“On Thursday, 9th October 2025, RRS operatives carried out sting operations at three notorious spots to arrest street urchins who harass motorists with broken-down vehicles in the metropolis,” the statement read in part.
The raids were conducted at Old Toll Gate/Motorways (Ketu), Adeniji Adele (Third Mainland Bridge), and Ile Epo (Agbado), with significant arrests made, particularly during the first operation.
The arrested suspects were identified as Kayode Sulaiman (30), Basiru Saheed (33), Ekene Ifeanyi (20), Ile-Ifa Sherif (27), and Adeleke Sakiru (23). The RRS disclosed that three of them are ex-convicts.
The statement also revealed that on October 11, 2025, officers responded to a distress call from a passerby at Ile Epo, who reported being attacked and robbed of two mobile phones by hoodlums in the area.
Acting swiftly on intelligence, operatives arrested Alabi Wasiu, one of the key suspects, alongside the buyer of one of the stolen phones, a Samsung AA2.
A follow-up operation led to the arrest of another prime suspect, Mustapha Alabi (24), also known as Alabi Yellow, who reportedly made “useful confessions” aiding the investigation.
Commander of the RRS, CSP Shola Jejeloye, reiterated the squad’s commitment to maintaining security and public safety, vowing that the clampdown on street urchins and miscreants in the Ile Epo axis and other hotspots across Lagos would continue without compromise.
All arrested suspects, according to the statement, have since been charged to court for prosecution.
