Plateau: Five killed in Kwi community reprisal after attack on cattle by Berom Militias

Not less than seven people were killed and several others injured when heavily armed gunmen suspected to be Fulani militants invaded the Kwi community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State on Friday night.

A resident of the community, Abel Gyang, who confirmed the attack on Saturday morning, said the bandits stormed the area at about 10:30 p.m. when residents had retired for the night.

“It was really a sad night for us in Kwi, as the Fulani bandits, numbering over 50 and carrying sophisticated weapons, invaded our village,” Gyang said.

“They overpowered our youths who had formed a vigilante group to protect the village. Once the youths escaped, the Fulani gunmen began shooting sporadically, throwing the people into utter confusion, with many managing to flee into nearby bushes and rocks for safety.

“They killed seven people and injured several others. Some people made frantic calls to security operatives, but there was no response from them,” he added.

Efforts to reach the state police spokesman, DSP Alabo Alfred, to confirm the attack proved abortive, as he neither responded to calls nor replied to messages sent to his phone at the time of this report.
