The Nasarawa State Police Command has rescued 39 foreign nationals who were reportedly held in a suspected human trafficking house in the Mararaba area of Karu Local Government Area.
The incident was contained in a post shared on X on Monday by security analyst Zagazola Makama.
According to Makama, the victims, 32 males and seven females were all from Mali, except one woman from Ivory Coast.
“They were discovered during a police operation in the Orange Market area of Mararaba,” Makama wrote.
The rescue followed a complaint made by Habi Baraji, a Malian national who speaks only French and Arabic.
Baraji told the police he was brought to Nigeria about a week earlier by another Malian, Abdullahi Berter, who promised to help him travel to France.
He later realised he had been deceived when Berter allegedly began asking him to bring more people from Mali for unclear reasons.
Baraji also informed officers that he suspected several others were being held in a house nearby.
“Acting on the information, detectives moved to the location and found 39 foreign nationals confined inside a bungalow, none of whom could speak any Nigerian language.
“The police immediately evacuated them to safety,” he wrote.
According to the report, the victims are now in protective custody as authorities begin profiling and contact the Malian and Ivorian consulates for further action.
