Man arrested by Police over distribution of adulterated engine oil

The Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, has arrested a 26-year-old man accused of producing and distributing adulterated engine oil across Nigeria.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Gbenga Afolayan, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Saturday, noting that the investigation followed a written petition submitted to the office of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the zone, Mr Adegoke Fayoade.

The petition alleged that engine oil products were being illegally adulterated.

“The case was promptly referred to the Zonal Anti-Piracy Unit for intelligence-led investigation,” Afolayan said.

“Our detectives successfully arrested the suspect, who reportedly admitted to importing and producing adulterated engine oil from China and distributing it to multiple states in Nigeria,” he added.

During coordinated raids, police recovered approximately 280 gallons of adulterated engine oil from locations in Lagos, Ogun, Imo, Enugu, and Kano.

The Standard Organisation of Nigeria, SON, later confirmed that the seized products did not meet Nigerian Industrial Standards, validating the allegations.

DSP Afolayan added that Mr Fayoade reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting consumers, supporting legitimate businesses, and prosecuting offenders of economic crimes.
