IGP Tunji Disu Inaugurates State Police Committee, Task Members On Professionalism

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, on Wednesday inaugurated an eight-member committee to drive the implementation of state police and advance his policing vision, days after his confirmation as the 23rd indigenous IGP.

Disu made the move during his first formal engagement with senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force following his appointment by President Bola Tinubu.

His appointment was unanimously ratified by the Nigeria Police Council, clearing the way for his swearing-in at the Presidential Villa.

Professor Olu Ogunsakin will head the eight-member state police implementation committee.

Addressing the police high command, Disu said leadership is “not about position but responsibility,” stressing that professionalism, discipline and accountability must define policing nationwide.

He emphasised that authority must be exercised with restraint and that respect for human rights remains non-negotiable.

“Every Nigerian deserves to be treated with dignity, fairness and justice, regardless of status or background,” he said.

The new IGP also announced plans to strengthen internal oversight mechanisms within the Force, directing that the Public Complaint Unit and the X-Squad be empowered to function independently.

On decentralisation, Disu said state police would allow different tiers of government to take a more active role in tackling insecurity.

His inauguration of the committee comes at a critical time, amid rising concerns over kidnappings, banditry and community attacks across the country.

President Tinubu appointed Disu as Acting IGP on February 24, 2026, following the resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun.

The state police initiative is part of the administration’s broader security reforms aimed at improving response time and strengthening grassroots policing nationwide.
