IGP Disu meets civil society leaders, pledges stronger police accountability

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening accountability mechanisms within the Nigeria Police Force following a meeting with a delegation of civil society organisations in Abuja.

The delegation, led by human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), was received at the Force Headquarters on Thursday and included representatives from legal, governance, and security reform groups.

Among those present were Adesina Oke of the National Association of Democratic Lawyers, Okeke Chinwike of the African Law Foundation, Barbara Magaji of Amnesty International, Anietie Ewang of Human Rights Watch, Samson Itodo of Yiaga Africa, Bathsheba Taglia of CISLAC/Transparency International Nigeria, Kemi Okenyodo of Partners West Africa-Nigeria, and Itia Otabor of the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development.

Falana congratulated Disu on his appointment and urged the police leadership to ensure strict compliance with the Nigeria Police Act 2020, particularly provisions relating to suspects’ rights, including family notification upon arrest, access to legal representation, and the prohibition of arrests over civil disputes.

Responding, Disu expressed appreciation for the engagement with civil society and reiterated his commitment to people-centred policing.

“Effective policing must address both major crimes and the everyday concerns of citizens. We are committed to strengthening accountability, improving transparency, and ensuring that our operations respect the rights of all Nigerians,” he said.

The police chief said ongoing reforms within the force include updates to training manuals, improved welfare for officers, and clear directives against involvement in civil matters.

He also pledged to enhance transparency through improvements to the Complaint Response Unit and the Monitoring Unit, assuring that accountability and respect for human rights would remain central to police operations.
