Police arrest suspected arms dealer in Kano, recover three AK-47 rifles

The Kano State Police Command says it has arrested a suspected arms dealer and recovered three fabricated AK-47 rifles alongside other dangerous items during an operation in Kano.

In a statement issued by police spokesman CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the operation was carried out by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad under the newly created Violent Crime Response Unit introduced as part of reforms by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

The statement said the operation was conducted on May 9, 2026, around Dandinshe Quarters in Dala Local Government Area on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.

Police said the operatives arrested a 35-year-old suspect identified as Umar Danladi Usman of Kurna Layin Masallacin Juma’a. He was reportedly intercepted inside a Honda Accord car with registration number TFA 680 AA.

According to the statement, a search on the suspect and the vehicle led to the recovery of three fabricated AK-47 rifles, revolver type, five live cartridges, one AK-47 empty shell, a police identity card suspected to be fake, three sharp jack knives, and a pair of jungle desert boots.

The police spokesperson said, “During interrogation, the suspect confessed to procuring the fabricated rifles from Dutsin-Ma LGA, Katsina State. He is currently in police custody, and a discreet investigation is ongoing to apprehend his accomplices and dismantle the supply network.”

The statement added that CP Bakori praised the officers involved in the operation for their professionalism, courage, and precision during the raid.

Kiyawa said the police commissioner noted that the successful operation demonstrated the impact of ongoing police reforms aimed at improving intelligence gathering, coordination among units, and rapid response to violent crimes.

The commissioner also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating illegal arms trafficking, kidnapping, and other violent crimes across Kano State.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing useful information to the police to enhance security in the state.
