Two arrested over unlawful possession of firearm in Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested two suspects identified as Adeola Mathew and Rasheed Omoniyi for conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms in Ifo local government area of the state.

The suspects were arrested at about 6:30 a.m at their criminal hideout along Ibogun Road, NITEL Area, Ifo, on Friday.

In a statement made available on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the arrest followed an intelligence-led operation.


Babaseyi stated that one of the suspects, Mathew aged 47, was apprehended at the scene, and one locally made pistol was found concealed within the premises.

He said, “The arrest was effected on Friday, 9th May 2026, at about 6:30 a.m., when detectives attached to Ifo Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Kamorudeen Olabisi, acted on credible intelligence and stormed a criminal hideout along Ibogun Road, NITEL Area, Ifo.

“During the operation, Adeola Mathew was apprehended at the scene, while a search conducted at the hideout led to the recovery of one locally made pistol concealed within the premises.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the recovered firearm was allegedly handed over to the suspect by Rasheed Omoniyi, who was subsequently tracked and arrested by the operatives.”

The command’s spokesperson noted that the recovered locally made pistol has been secured as exhibit, while investigation is ongoing to ascertain the source of the firearm and the suspects’ possible involvement in other criminal activities.

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the operatives for their swift response and reiterated the command’s commitment to combating crime and ensuring the safety of residents across the state.

Ojajuni also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through the police emergency lines.
