IGP Disu, NPTF, POWA Launch Skills Acquisition Programme to Strengthen Police Families
…Say Economic Empowerment of Officers’ Households Is Key to Better Policing
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed that the welfare of police personnel extends beyond the individual officer, stressing that strong and economically empowered families are essential to building a more motivated, professional and effective Nigeria Police Force.
The IGP stated this on Thursday during the launch of the Maiden Skills Acquisition and Empowerment Programme for Spouses of Junior Police Officers, organised by the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) in partnership with the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), at the MD Abubakar Police Barracks, Dei-Dei, Abuja.
The programme, themed “Empowering Families, Strengthening Communities: Advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda Through Skills Acquisition and Economic Empowerment,” was hosted by the Honourable Minister of Police Affairs, Senator (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam, CON, and attended by senior government officials, police leadership and beneficiary spouses of junior police officers from across the country.
Describing the initiative as a strategic investment in police welfare, IGP Disu said the effectiveness and morale of officers are closely linked to the well-being of their families.
He commended the resilience and unwavering support of spouses of junior police officers and encouraged beneficiaries to view the vocational training and start-up resources as a pathway to sustainable livelihoods and long-term financial independence rather than short-term relief.
In his keynote address, the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mr. Mohammed Sheidu, said the programme reflects the Fund’s commitment to complementing investments in police training, infrastructure and operational capacity with initiatives that strengthen the economic resilience of police families.
He noted that the vocational training and start-up packs were carefully designed to equip beneficiaries with practical skills for sustainable income generation, while aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Also speaking, the National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, described the initiative as a strategic investment in the morale, professionalism and overall effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force rather than an act of charity.
She observed that stable families form the foundation of effective policing, adding that empowering the spouses of police personnel ultimately contributes to stronger communities and enhanced national security.
Mrs. Disu reaffirmed POWA’s commitment to sustaining its partnership with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund and called on government institutions, development partners and corporate organisations to support initiatives that improve the welfare and economic well-being of police families.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to working with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, POWA and other stakeholders to strengthen the welfare of its personnel and their families through sustainable, impact-driven programmes that enhance both family resilience and institutional effectiveness.
