…Funke Akindele Joins Police Leadership to Celebrate Police Families
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and the National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, on Saturday hosted beneficiaries of the POWA CARES Initiative in Lagos to a special dinner, fulfilling a promise made during the association’s outreach held in April 2026.
The event, which was graced by Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele, brought together police officers, their spouses and children for an evening of appreciation, interaction and celebration of the families who support policing in Nigeria.
The beneficiaries were among winners selected through a ballot draw during the Lagos outreach, where they earned the opportunity to have dinner with the Inspector-General and the POWA President. In addition to the dinner, each beneficiary received a cash gift of ₦500,000 in recognition of their participation.
The dinner marked another milestone in the POWA CARES Initiative, which has become one of the association’s flagship welfare programmes. During the Lagos outreach, more than 1,000 police families benefited from free eye, dental and general medical services, prescription eyeglasses and specialist referrals for critical health cases. The programme also provided ₦50,000 empowerment grants to 200 families, distributed ₦10,000 Cowry Cards to raffle winners and awarded 15 nursing scholarships to children of police families.
Speaking at the dinner, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, described police families as indispensable partners in the work of the Nigeria Police Force, saying the sacrifices made by spouses and children often go unnoticed despite their vital contribution to effective policing.
He praised the resilience and commitment of police wives, noting that the stability they provide at home enables officers to carry out their responsibilities with greater focus and dedication.
The Inspector-General also commended children from police families for their achievements, describing them as a source of pride to the Force, and expressed appreciation to Funke Akindele for identifying with police families and lending her support to the initiative.
The National President of POWA, Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, said the dinner demonstrated the association’s commitment to keeping its promises and ensuring that police families remain at the heart of its welfare programmes.
Congratulating the beneficiaries, she urged the children present to remain focused on their education, embrace discipline and hard work, and resist negative influences. She expressed confidence that they would continue to distinguish themselves across different professions and contribute positively to society.
In her remarks, Funke Akindele paid tribute to the wives of police officers, describing them as women of exceptional strength whose sacrifices often remain unseen.
She acknowledged the challenges of supporting spouses in a demanding profession while raising families and maintaining their homes, encouraging them to remain resilient and assuring them of her continued support.
Beyond the presentation of cash gifts and shared moments around the dinner table, the evening reflected POWA’s broader vision of welfare, one that extends beyond financial support to recognising, celebrating and strengthening the families behind the uniform.
For the beneficiaries, it was the fulfilment of a promise made four months earlier. For POWA, it was another demonstration of its commitment to ensuring that police families remain visible, valued and supported.
