…Proposes specialised legal training for investigators, prosecutors and police lawyers
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has proposed a strategic partnership between the Nigeria Police Force and the National Judicial Institute (NJI) to strengthen the capacity of police personnel through specialised legal and judicial training aimed at improving investigations, prosecutions and the administration of criminal justice.
The proposal was made during a visit by the Inspector-General to the National Judicial Institute in Abuja, where he was received by the Administrator of the Institute, Hon. Justice Babatunde Adeniran Adejumo (OFR), alongside the Institute Secretary, Mr. Olumo Abdulazeez, and members of the Institute’s management team.
Speaking during the meeting, the IGP reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to the rule of law and stressed the need for continuous professional development to enable police personnel respond more effectively to the changing demands of criminal investigations and prosecution.
He proposed a structured collaboration between the Force and the Institute to provide specialised training for police lawyers, prosecutors, Investigating Police Officers (IPOs) and other personnel in key areas including criminal justice administration, electronic evidence, cybercrime, digital forensics, human rights, prosecution advocacy and case management.
According to the Inspector-General, the proposed partnership would also explore executive education and professional certification programmes for police personnel, as well as joint seminars, workshops and research initiatives designed to improve investigative standards and strengthen prosecution processes across the country.
Responding, the Administrator of the National Judicial Institute, Justice Adejumo, welcomed the proposal and expressed the Institute’s readiness to collaborate with the Nigeria Police Force in advancing professional development within the criminal justice sector.
He also commended the Inspector-General for establishing a Police outpost within the Institute and appealed for continued collaboration to further strengthen security around the facility.
The proposed partnership reflects growing efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to deepen institutional collaboration with key stakeholders as part of ongoing reforms aimed at improving professionalism, strengthening investigations and enhancing the effective administration of criminal justice in Nigeria.
