Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has pledged increased investment in sports within the Nigeria Police Force following Corporal Ezekiel Nathaniel’s gold-medal success at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Disu made the commitment while receiving Nathaniel, the men’s 400 metres hurdles champion, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The IGP said Nathaniel’s achievement had reinforced the longstanding relationship between the Nigeria Police Force and sports, noting that the feat demonstrated what police personnel could accomplish when given the right platform and support.
“The Nigeria Police Force and sports have always been twins, bound together by shared values of discipline, teamwork and excellence,” Disu said.
“This victory is a powerful reminder of that bond, and of what our personnel can achieve when given the platform and support to thrive both in service and in competition.”
The Police chief assured officers with sporting talents that the Force would continue to identify, nurture and support athletes within its ranks.
“I want Corporal Ezekiel Nathaniel, and every officer watching, to know that this Force will continue to invest in and support police sports.
“We will keep identifying, nurturing and celebrating talent within our ranks, because a Force that is strong in body and spirit is a Force that serves the nation better,” he added.
Disu, who described himself as a sportsman, said he was particularly proud of Nathaniel’s performance at the Commonwealth Games.
He noted that the victory had brought honour not only to the athlete but also to the Nigeria Police Force and the country.
“As a sportsman myself, I take particular pride in this achievement. Corporal Ezekiel Nathaniel, you have honoured your uniform, your Force and your country,” the IGP said.
“Congratulations, and may this be the first of many more victories to come.”
Nathaniel’s triumph in Glasgow added another major achievement to the growing list of sporting successes recorded by serving police personnel and further highlighted the role of the Force in developing elite athletes in Nigeria.
