The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu has pledged stronger security and inclusive policing for Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs).
Disu made the commitment on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, when he received a delegation from TAF Africa led by its Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Jake Epelle, at the IGP’s Conference Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja.Law Enforcement
The delegation included the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Women Trust Fund, Mrs Brenda Anyanwu; Executive Director of TAF Africa, Mr Mayowa Aderibigbe; Chairman of the Nigeria Association of the Blind, Mr Agaba Jacob; and other representatives of the organisations.
Speaking during the meeting, Epelle commended the police leadership for what he described as its deliberate efforts to promote inclusive policing.
He also praised the professionalism of police personnel deployed during the recently concluded off-cycle elections, particularly the Osun State governorship election.
Epelle urged the IGP to develop a smart security architecture that adequately incorporates Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs). He also sought the IGP’s approval to host the first Inclusive Security Summit, which is expected to be funded by the European Union, and requested that the IGP attend and declare the summit open.Africans & Diaspora
The Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Women Trust Fund, Mrs Brenda Anyanwu, called for stronger collaboration between the organisation and the Force Gender Unit to promote gender-inclusive policing within the Nigeria Police Force.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Nigeria Association of the Blind, Agaba Jacob, advocated greater participation of PWDs in policing, particularly in intelligence-related roles.
He also called for stronger protection for persons with disabilities, noting that they remain particularly vulnerable to criminal activities, including sexual offences.
The delegation further urged the police to develop disability-focused policing strategies and structured mechanisms for engaging with the PWD community.
Responding, IGP Disu described the engagement as an eye-opening interaction and reiterated his commitment to training and retraining police personnel on appropriate, effective and dignified ways of engaging with persons with disabilities.
He stressed that the rights and vulnerabilities of PWDs must be recognised and protected in accordance with relevant national and international laws.
The IGP also pledged to ensure greater inclusion of PWDs in policing, particularly during the forthcoming general elections.
According to him, measures will be put in place to ensure that persons with disabilities are able to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely and without intimidation, discrimination or humiliation.
The Nigeria Police Force said it would continue to strengthen partnerships and adopt more inclusive policing strategies aimed at protecting the lives, rights and property of all residents, irrespective of their circumstances
