The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has returned to the Ago-Iwoye Police Division in Ogun State, where he began his career as a Divisional Police Officer several decades ago.
Disu’s visit was disclosed on Saturday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, in a post on X accompanied by a video of the police chief touring the station.
According to Iniedu, the IGP revisited his first police station and retraced some of the places associated with his early years in the Nigeria Police Force.
“From Ago Iwoye to Force HQ. From DPO to IGP. IGP Olatunji Disu psc (+), NPM @TunjiDisu1 just walked back into his very first station, Ago Iwoye Division, Ogun State, decades after it all began,” Iniedu wrote.
The police spokesman said Disu visited his former office, residence and farm during the visit.
“He stood in his old office. He walked his former farm. He stepped through the same residence where a young officer once dreamed of greatness,” he said.
Iniedu said the IGP used the occasion to reflect on his career journey and the importance of remembering one’s beginnings.
He quoted Disu as asking: “Can you visit where you worked before?”
Describing the visit as more than an emotional return to the past, Iniedu said, “This wasn’t nostalgia. This was an operational pilgrimage. A reminder that every giant was once a beginner. Every throne has a starting point.”
He added: “The journey of a thousand miles doesn’t begin with a step. It began at Ago-Iwoye.”
Speaking in the video, Disu described his return to the division as an emotional experience, recalling how his time there helped him develop his leadership abilities.
“It’s a very emotional one. This is my first police station. This is where I learned to be a DPO,” he said.
Disu recalled that he had never previously served as a DPO before his posting to Ago-Iwoye and described the assignment as an opportunity to test his leadership skills.
“This is the first time I was able to test my leadership ability. I remember when I was posted here. I’ve never been a DPO before,” he said.
The IGP said returning to the station brought back memories of his former living quarters and office.
“It’s emotional being here. I’ve just gone around to see my room. I’ve entered the office and I’ve looked around,” he said.
Disu also recalled some of the people he encountered during his early years at the division, including an elderly woman who operated a business near the police station and a man he identified as Baba Aladji.
“I’m going to go around the streets. I know there’s an old woman in front of the police station. She used to sell things.
“She rears goats. The goats always come into our station. I remember Baba Aladji.
“Aladji was very old. I always say this. For everybody, not only police officers.
“Where you work, do well. The question is, can you go back to where you worked before?” Disu said.
