Police record 198 convictions, 240 arrests in Yobe

The Yobe State Police Command said it has secured 198 convictions and arrested 240 suspects for various offences between July and date in the ongoing fight against crime in the state.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Usman Kanfani Jibrin, disclosed this on Wednesday while briefing journalists in Damaturu.

“The command recorded 145 criminal cases within the period, comprising 16 murder cases, 9 rape cases, one kidnapping, two extortion cases, five armed robbery cases and 112 other offences”, he said.

Giving an update on prosecution, CP Jibrin said 198 cases secured convictions, while two were acquitted.

He added that 26 cases are currently before the courts, 10 are under investigation and four are awaiting legal advice.

“These gains reflect our resolve to both detain offenders and ensure prosecution via thorough probes and firm action,” the Commissioner of Police stated.

He said tactical units also recorded major breakthroughs as operatives apprehended 171 suspected narcotics vendors and consumers, recovering illicit drugs, banned substances and dangerous weapons.

On financial crimes, CP Jibrin said one suspect was arrested for fraud and misappropriation of N77 million, while another was detained for obtaining money and goods through fake bank transfer alerts.

He added that, relying on technical intelligence, officers arrested two suspects who allegedly extorted N630,000 from two victims, noting that the suspects confessed during interrogation.

The command, according to him, also recorded progress in cases involving the kidnapping of juveniles and culpable homicide, with suspects arrested and charged to court.

CP Jibrin reiterated the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and effective community partnership.
