…As CP warns against attacks on Police personnel, formations
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested 19 suspected cultists following a gun duel during a crime prevention patrol in the Bakassi Yimitu area of the Apo-Waru axis in Abuja.
The operation, carried out on Wednesday, July 24, 2025, was led by a Joint Task Force comprising police personnel, local vigilantes, and hunters. It was in response to repeated distress calls from residents over rising cult activities in the area.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the team encountered a group of suspected cultists who opened fire on sighting the security operatives. A shootout ensued, during which 19 suspects were apprehended and detained at the Waru Police Outstation. Some suspects reportedly fled with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.
Unfortunately, one police officer and a local vigilante sustained serious injuries and were taken to a medical facility for urgent care.
Shortly after the initial confrontation, the escaped suspects allegedly regrouped and attacked the Waru Police Outstation in a failed bid to free their detained accomplices. During the attack, parts of the station were vandalized, three police patrol vehicles were damaged, and six privately owned vehicles within the premises were also destroyed.
The statement noted that the attackers were successfully repelled as reinforcements were swiftly deployed to restore calm in the area.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao S. Adewale, psc, mnips, condemned the attacks in strong terms, warning that any assault on security personnel or facilities will not be tolerated.
”The Command will not rest until all those involved in this criminal act are brought to justice. Attacks on police personnel or formations will be met with the full weight of the law,” CP Adewale said.
