Lagos State Police Command has arrested thirteen suspects in connection with the mob attack on a police inspector seen being brutally beaten in a viral video circulated across social media platforms.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the police clarified that contrary to online claims, the officer was not caught stealing.
She described the viral narration as false, misleading, and deliberately sensationalised.
According to the statement, the assaulted officer is an Inspector attached to the Lagos State Taskforce.
He was part of an enforcement operation on Brown Street, Oshodi, where the team was implementing the state government’s ban on indiscriminate parking.
During the operation, the officer flagged down a motorist who attempted to park unlawfully. The driver allegedly became violent, leading to a confrontation.
In the course of the scuffle, the Inspector accidentally discharged shots into the road, and fragments from the impact reportedly injured some passersby.
The gunshot incident triggered the mob action captured in the viral footage, during which the Inspector was attacked and sustained severe injuries.
SP Adebisi confirmed that 13 individuals identified in the video have been arrested and are currently being detained. They will be charged to court upon completion of investigations.
The suspects include: Dele Oriade (39), Adekunle Olalere (40), Mudashiru Olamilekan (28), Anayo Achusie (34), Joshua Enwonyin (24), Okoro Okechukwu (26), Rilwan Lateef (32), Damilare Odebode (22), Haruna Aleshi (25), Sodiq Omoniyi (26), Chukwudi Patience (25), Godstime Okafor (26), and Chinedu Divine (29).
The Command also disclosed that the officer involved has been placed under disciplinary procedures for his unprofessional conduct during the incident.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, condemned the attack on the inspector and warned that assaulting police personnel performing lawful duties is a criminal offence that will be fully prosecuted.
The Command urged residents to remain calm, desist from sharing false narratives, and support ongoing efforts to maintain law and order across the state.
