Police Intercept Suspect With 100 Rounds of Ammunition at Zamfara Border

Security operatives have intercepted a 30-year-old suspect allegedly transporting 100 rounds of live ammunition along the border between Zamfara State and Katsina State, in a continued effort to stem the proliferation of illegal arms.

Zagazola Makama reports that the arrest was made at about 7:20 am on April 17, 2026, during a stop-and-search operation at a checkpoint in the Yankara axis, following actionable intelligence.

The suspect, identified as Umar Sani, a resident of Magami village in Gusau Local Government Area, was apprehended while riding a motorcycle en route from Abuja to his hometown.

According to security officials, a search conducted on the motorcycle led to the discovery of 100 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, commonly used in AK-47 rifles, concealed within the fuel tank.

“The concealment method indicates a deliberate attempt to evade detection and suggests possible links to a wider supply network,” a security source said.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody and assisting with investigations aimed at identifying the source of the ammunition and potential collaborators.

Officials described the interception as part of ongoing operations to disrupt the illegal flow of weapons fuelling criminal activities across the region.

“We remain committed to cutting off the logistics chain that sustains armed groups,” another official said, urging residents to remain vigilant and provide timely intelligence to support security agencies.
