Staying aware of your surroundings (situational awareness) is your first and most effective line of defense against crime or emergencies. It means actively observing who and what is around you to spot potential risks before they become a threat
Actionable ways to practice situational awareness every day
Put the phone away: Looking down at your phone limits your ability to hear and see danger. Keep it tucked away in busy public places like transit hubs, markets, or crowded streets.
Scan your environment: Notice the people around you, parked vehicles, and potential hazards. Know the locations of the nearest exit points or public spaces.
Walk with purpose: Walk confidently and observe. Criminals often look for distracted or hesitant targets.
Trust your instincts: If an area, a person, or a vehicle makes you feel uncomfortable, remove yourself immediately.
