Jigawa Police Begin Operation Velvet to Enforce Traffic Laws

The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested 17 motorists for alleged violations of road traffic laws during the commencement of its special enforcement operation, code-named Operation Velvet.

Spokesman of the command, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued to newsmen.

He said the operation, which began on Monday in Dutse Local Government Area, is aimed at enforcing compliance with road traffic regulations, reducing traffic-related offences and accidents, and improving safety for motorists and other road users.

SP Shiisu explained that 17 motorists were intercepted for various offences, including the use of covered number plates, unauthorised use of tinted glass and overloading.

According to the Police Command, the affected motorists were arrested by the enforcement team and subsequently charged before the appropriate court for prosecution in accordance with the law.

The command said Operation Velvet was not designed to inconvenience law-abiding motorists but to promote responsible driving and ensure compliance with established traffic regulations.

It added that the operation would be extended to major towns and cities across the state, warning that motorists found violating traffic laws would be arrested and made to face the full consequences of the law.

The Commissioner of Police, Jigawa State Command, CP Tijjani Murtala, urged motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle and motorcycle riders, as well as other road users, to strictly observe traffic laws and avoid reckless driving and other dangerous practices.

He also called on members of the public to support the operation by providing useful information on persistent traffic violations that could endanger lives and property.
