Bauchi: Police foil kidnapping attempt, arrest two suspects

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested two suspects over an alleged plot to kidnap and kill a resident of Machiyar Kuka Village in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects were identified as 25-year-old Sunusi Muhammad of Tallaran Village and 20-year-old Idris Aliyu.

The command said the arrests followed intelligence provided by a concerned citizen about threats allegedly made against the resident by unknown persons.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, the victim was allegedly threatened over the phone and asked to pay N1.5 million, with the suspects threatening to kidnap and kill him if he failed to comply.

The police said detectives attached to Bununu Division commenced a covert operation after receiving the information.

It said Muhammad was arrested at about 1:30am on September 11, 2026, while allegedly attempting to collect the ransom.

“During preliminary investigation and interrogation, the suspect mentioned his accomplice, one Idris Aliyu, 20 years old,” the statement said.

Police said operatives subsequently arrested Aliyu following the information provided by Muhammad.

“Both suspects have since made voluntary confessions to the crime,” the command added.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Bauchi, for further investigation and prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, commended the officers for what he described as their professionalism and prompt action.

He also appreciated the citizen who provided the information, while urging members of the public to report suspicious activities and threats to the nearest police station.

“The Command remains committed to proactive policing and urges members of the public to promptly report any suspicious activities or threats to the nearest Police Station,” the statement quoted the commissioner as saying.
