Police apprehend man for assaulting wife in Osun

The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 39-year-old man, Oluwatomi Oliyide, for allegedly assaulting his wife, Odunayo Oliyide.

According to the police, Oluwatomi allegedly beat his wife to the point of causing serious injury after she demanded financial support for their children.

According to police reports, the incident occurred on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at their residence in the capital Area of Osogbo, Osun State.

The suspect, an indigene of Abeokuta, Ogun State, fled the scene after the attack but was apprehended on Tuesday, July 15 and detained at the Dada Estate Police Station.

Speaking to journalists, the victim, 32-year-old Odunayo Oliyide, a fashion designer and indigene of Oka-Akoko, Ondo State, revealed she had been in a relationship with Oluwatomi since 2019 without a formal marriage ceremony.

She stated, “I met him in Lagos, and we later relocated to Osogbo. I have been taking care of our two children alone, even doing menial jobs to pay their school fees.”

The mother of two alleged that the assault followed her repeated pleas for her husband to contribute financially to the upbringing of their two sons aged five and three years.

“He spends his money on gambling instead of his children. I told him I was tired and planned to take the children to my parents. He didn’t respond, and we hadn’t been on speaking terms,” she added.

Recounting the assault, Odunayo said, “On Wednesday, I returned from church and told him I was going to a film rehearsal. He got angry, said I didn’t greet him properly, and vowed to beat me until I lost my sight. He started punching me in the eyes.”

While revealing alleged past domestic abuses, which included being beaten while pregnant with their first child, the victim added that he also beat his previous wives which she found out after they had already started living together.

Odunayo also disclosed that she had reported her husband to both his parents and their pastor, but no change was observed.

“People have tried to intervene, but he has refused to change. He keeps saying he will not support the children until his building project is complete,” she said.

According to reports, the suspect was unaware that his wife had already reported the matter to the police before his return home, leading to his swift arrest.

Human rights activist, Citizen Lola Wey, who took Odunayo to hospital for medical attention, confirmed that the matter had been formally reported at the Dada Estate Police Station.

Police spokesperson, SP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the arrest, stating, “The suspect is in custody and will be charged to court after investigations are concluded.”
